Purpose
Rather than making grants directly to individual artists, ensembles and companies, the foundation supports national service organizations that administer re-granting programs on behalf of the foundation to:
- Support emerging, mid-career and established artists throughout the country and abroad;
- Reach artists, institutions and audiences in nearly all 50 states; and
- Serve audiences reflecting diverse socio-economic and cultural communities in America and abroad.
This strategy allows the foundation to retain a small staff while reaching a larger, more geographically and culturally diverse constituency.
Grant Opportunities
Individual artists, ensembles and companies that wish to apply for funding should contact the following national service organizations, which have received grants from the foundation to support the re-granting programs described below.
Multi-Disciplinary
The Association of Performing Arts Presenters offers grants to college and university presenters proposing innovative ideas for further integrating the performing arts into campus life and the surrounding community.
Creative Campus Innovations Grant Program

The Creative Capital Foundation offers creation funds and professional development assistance for individual performing artists.

Jazz
Chamber Music America (CMA) offers several grant opportunities through the Doris Duke Jazz Ensembles Project, which supports the New Works: Creation and Presentation re-granting program, the jazz component of CMA’s Residency Partnership Program, and the creation of a new CMA initiative that will encourage presenters to program jazz.

Theatre
The Association of Performing Arts Presenters offers grants through the Ensemble Theatre Collaborations Grant and Travel Subsidy Program, which supports creation and touring projects that build collaborations among ensemble theatre companies, arts presenters and theatres.
