Doris Duke Charitable Foundation

Special Projects

The foundation occasionally supports projects that address timely or catalytic opportunities in the performing arts field that fit within the Arts Program’s strategy but do not fit within its existing initiatives.

Grants awarded for special projects to date include:

  • Two major archival projects led by the Library of Congress to preserve the artistic legacies of modern dance pioneers Martha Graham and Katherine Dunham.
  • Support for the technology center and infrastructure at the new Jazz at Lincoln Center facility in New York City’s Columbus Circle, which will feature jazz programming as well as theater, opera and classical music.
  • Projects addressing needs of the performing arts field related to the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, including a grant to the Asia Society for its “Understanding Islam” series, and to the New York Foundation for the Arts for its Artists Recovery Fund.
