Disposition of Doris Duke's Personal Property

In addition to financial assets, Doris Duke bequeathed most of her personal possessions and effects to the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. In 2001, the foundation launched a multi-year, multi-phase process to inventory and dispose of Doris Duke’s personal property in keeping with the guidelines in her will. The process – which will conclude in 2010 – was designed to take into account historical, curatorial, social, legal and financial considerations.

As part of the process, four auctions were arranged to sell Doris Duke's personal property, with the proceeds benefiting the foundation and the nonprofit organizations it supports. In addition, the foundation has donated approximately 700 objects from Doris Duke's Southeast Asian Art Collection to approximately 20 museums across the country and abroad.

Following is more information about the auctions and several of the major museum donations.
