Medical Research

What We Support

Through its Medical Research Program, the foundation strives to advance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human disease by supporting a culture of medical innovation and excellence. We focus on incentivizing early-career creativity in clinical research as well as efforts aimed at building a more equitable research enterprise.

How We Define Clinical Research

Clinical research involves the scientific investigation of the etiology, prevention, diagnosis or treatment of human disease using human subjects, human populations or materials of human origin. Included in this definition are studies or projects that utilize tissues or pathogens only if they can be linked to a patient. In keeping with the wishes expressed in Doris Duke’s will, the Doris Duke Foundation does not support research that uses non-human animals.

Areas Not Funded

In general, the Doris Duke Foundation does not fund institutions outside the United States or research that uses animals, in keeping with the wishes expressed in Doris Duke’s will.
