Clinical Research Fellowship for Medical Students

Purpose

The Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship (CRF) provides support for one year of full-time clinical research training. The main goal of the program is to encourage medical students to pursue careers in clinical research. Interested medical students must be willing to take a year out from school and conduct fellowship research and training at one of 12 hosting medical schools.

Participating Medical Schools

The CRF program is hosted at the following
12 medical schools:

  1. Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons

  2. Harvard Medical School

  3. Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

  4. Mount Sinai School of Medicine

  5. University of California, San Francisco,
    School of Medicine


  6. University of Iowa
    Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine


  7. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
    School of Medicine


  8. University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine

  9. University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

  10. University of Texas Southwestern
    Medical Center at Dallas


  11. Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis

  12. Yale University School of Medicine

Each participating medical school:

  • Solicits applications from students at any U.S. medical school
  • Offers fellowships to at least 5 medical students per year, 2 of which must be matriculated at another school
  • Matches fellows to outstanding clinical research mentors
  • Provides fellows with a one-year fellowship experience in clinical research that includes both didactic and research components

Fellowship Details

To date, the CRF program has supported a total of 627 fellows, with 129 fellows in the current (2008-2009) class.

A minimum of 60 domestic and 12 international fellowships will be awarded across the 12 participating CRF schools for the 2009-2010 fellowship year, which begins on July 1, 2009.

Fellow Stipends & Benefits

  • $27,000 stipend
  • Health insurance
  • Financial support to attend the year-end CRF meeting
  • Supplementary research and training funds

Eligibility

Students matriculated at any U.S. medical school who are in good academic standing and have completed two or more years of medical school prior to the start of the fellowship are eligible to apply to any of the participating schools.

Fellowship Applications

The 2009-2010 fellowship competition has closed. Application information for the 2010-2011 fellowship year will be posted in the fall of 2009.

Competition Timeline & Announcements

Competitions are held annually with application deadlines in January for the fellowship year starting in July. To be notified of future competitions, sign up for the Medical Research Program's mailing list.
