Goals & Strategies
To advance the translation of biomedical discoveries into applications that improve human health through the support of clinical research.
The Medical Research Program supports clinical research through two complementary strategies:
Encourage and Develop Clinical Research Careers
The foundation supports the development of clinical investigators through the following competitive awards:
- Clinical Research Continuum: High School to College
- Clinical Research Mentorship
- Clinical Scientist Development Award
- Fund to Retain Clinical Scientists
- International Clinical Research Fellowship
Advance Biomedical Research and Innovation
The foundation supports innovative approaches to clinical research in targeted disease areas through the following competitive award:
Definition of Clinical Research
Clinical research involves the scientific investigation of the etiology, prevention, diagnosis or treatment of human disease using human subjects, human populations or materials of human origin. Included in the definition are studies that utilize tissues or pathogens only if they can be linked to a patient.
Areas Not Funded
In keeping with the wishes expressed in Doris Duke's will, the Medical Research Program does not fund research that uses animals.
