Museums & Centers

In her will, Doris Duke requested that her properties in New Jersey, Hawaii and Rhode Island be opened for public visitation and used for educational programs. The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation funds and oversees these museums and centers.

Duke Farms

Duke Farms is a 2,700-acre center in Hillsborough, New Jersey, created by Doris Duke's father, James Buchanan Duke, at the turn of the 20th century. Duke Farms was first opened to the public for visitation on May 19, 2012 and has a mission of environmental stewardship.

Shangri La

Shangri La is the home Doris Duke built in Honolulu, Hawai'i, which was designed around her extensive collection of art by Muslim artists from across the world. Shangri La serves as a museum for learning about the global cultures of Islamic art, and offers tours as well events and residency programs.

Rough Point

Rough Point is the Duke family mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, which features an extensive collection of European fine and decorative arts. Rough Point is open to the public as a museum and is managed by the Newport Restoration Foundation, which was founded by Doris Duke in 1968.
